New eAA report explores the future of national examinations in a changing world

Trust, integrity and leadership emerged as defining priorities at the 2026 National Examinations Roundtable

How can national examination systems remain trusted, relevant and resilient as education, technology and workforce expectations continue to evolve?

That question sits at the heart of the e-Assessment Association's newly published 2026 National Examinations Roundtable Report, bringing together insights from senior leaders representing ministries of education, regulators, national examination organisations and assessment technology providers from around the world.

Now in its third year, the National Examinations Roundtable has become a unique international forum for sharing experience and exploring the strategic challenges shaping the future of high-stakes assessment. Building on discussions held in 2024 and 2025, this year's report reflects how the conversation is evolving.

While implementing digital assessment remains an important priority, delegates increasingly focused on a broader challenge: ensuring national examination systems continue to deliver trusted, fair and relevant qualifications in a rapidly changing educational landscape.

Although participants represented countries with very different education systems, regulatory frameworks and stages of digital maturity, the discussions revealed remarkable consistency in the findings that emerged across the five themes explored during the Roundtable:

• Building confidence in national assessment
• Maintaining integrity and operational resilience
• Rethinking assessment design
• Preparing learners for the future
• Leadership, policy and international collaboration

The report captures the key findings and practical insights emerging from the discussions, highlighting the shared challenges facing national examination organisations and the growing importance of international collaboration.

Reflecting on the discussions, Graham Hudson, Chair of the e-Assessment Association, said: "The National Examinations Roundtable provides a unique opportunity for senior leaders from across the world to share experiences openly and learn from one another. While every country operates within its own educational and regulatory context, the discussions continue to demonstrate that many of the challenges facing national examinations are shared. This report captures those conversations and provides valuable insight into how the international assessment community is responding to a rapidly changing landscape."

One of the strongest messages to emerge from this year's Roundtable was that technology alone will not determine the future of national assessment. Delegates consistently returned to the importance of maintaining public confidence, protecting assessment integrity and ensuring qualifications remain relevant as education, regulation and workforce needs continue to evolve.

The report also demonstrates how conversations about emerging technologies increasingly extend beyond implementation to wider questions about assessment design, curriculum, governance and public trust.

The eAA hopes the report will support policymakers, regulators, awarding organisations and assessment leaders by providing an international perspective on the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of national examinations.
