Managing Multilingual Assessments: The Importance of Accuracy, Consistency and Control

Ensuring assessments are fair for every student is a primary goal for all academic institutions.

However, in regions where multiple languages are spoken, this brings additional challenges.
Questions must be translated accurately, with their original meaning preserved, and candidates
should be able to engage with assessment content without unnecessary language barriers. It’s
important they are tested on their knowledge, not their language proficiency.
Translating questions is only one part of the process when delivering assessments in multiple
languages. Assessment providers also need an effective way to manage translated content, maintain
consistency across language versions and ensure questions remain accurate and fit for purpose as
assessments evolve. This can be complex.

The challenges of managing multilingual exams
One of the key challenges is preserving the original meaning and intended difficulty of each question
across translations. Even small differences in wording can affect how a question is interpreted,
potentially influencing a candidate’s response and creating an imbalance in fairness across language
versions.
Coordinating translators and reviewers is another area which can be complex to manage, particularly
when working with large question banks or external specialists.
Version control can present further challenges. When a question is amended in one language, the
corresponding translations may also need updating. If changes are managed manually across
separate documents or systems, it can be difficult to keep track of every version and ensure nothing is
missed. Having a clear version control process can make a real difference.

Streamlining translation management
Through working closely with customers, Speedwell understands these challenges. In response, the
eSystem Translation Management Module was developed to help teams manage translated
questions more effectively while maintaining control over question versions and the progress of
translations through review and approval.
Users can create new questions for translation or work with existing questions directly within the
system. Bulk actions allow large numbers of questions to be managed at once, supporting high-
volume translation projects.
Where external translation specialists are required, questions can be exported and imported once
translation is complete. Unique question codes allow the eSystem to match imported content to the
relevant questions. External translators can therefore work on the content without needing access to
the exam management system.
Plus, the inbuilt audit trail tracks changes and includes checks that identify missing or outdated
translations. These features help assessment teams identify potential issues and reduce the risk of
updates being overlooked.
Users can also track the progress of translations across the whole question workflow, from the initial
translation through to review and approval. This makes it easier for everyone involved to see what
stage each question has reached and what still needs to be done.
