The Transformative Power of Education and Assessment Technology
While the move to embrace technology to improve learning and assessment has been evident for some time, in recent years adoption has accelerated significantly, driven in part by the COVID pandemic, and in part by new technologies.
We asked eAA Board members, Garrett Sherry and Anna Phelan to consider the transformative power of education and assessment technology
The technological revolution in education has been marked by the widespread adoption of digital platforms, e-learning modules, and innovative educational apps. The adoption of smartphones and affordable internet connectivity has enabled many students to access educational resources previously unavailable to them. This shift has democratised education, allowing learners to explore a variety of subjects and skills at their own pace and from wherever they live, as long as they have an internet connection.
While some wonder how to achieve this at scale, this is something that India, with a population of over a billion people, is embracing. Technology plays a significant role in India’s National Education Policy, underscoring its commitment to leveraging technological advancements for educational enhancement. Many emerging economies are in a position to ‘leapfrog’ some traditional education practices, as they develop their national education systems. Taking advantage of the latest learning and assessment technology provides an opportunity to bypass more expensive and exclusive options. This has the potential to provide wider access to education where it might not previously have been possible.
E-Assessment: A natural extension
As access to education expands through digital solutions, e- assessment emerges as a natural extension. Formative assessments, which occur throughout the learning process can be seamlessly integrated into digital platforms, providing real-time feedback to students and aiding personalized learning journeys. Summative assessment can be modernized through e-Assessment platforms which not only saves time and resources but also enhances the accuracy and fairness of the evaluation process.
While the potential benefits are significant, ensuring equality and inclusion is something that policymakers, educators, and technology providers are focused on, emphasising the need to bridge the digital divide. Notably, projects submitted for the e-Assessment Awards address how accessibility can be incorporated successfully into projects and technical solutions.
The potential impact of integrating technology into education and assessment is immense. If India can make this a reality, we hope it will inspire others to embrace the transformative potential of technology in learning and assessment.
