Association of American Medical Colleges Continues Relationship that Began with Migration of MCAT from Paper to Computer-Based Exams

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, USA — The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and Prometric Inc., a trusted provider of market-leading test development and delivery solutions, today announced that they have renewed their contract through 2017 to deliver the new and expanded Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®). The new MCAT, to launch in 2015, gives greater attention to the concepts tomorrow’s doctors will need, including:

  • A new section — “Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior” — recognizes the importance of socio-cultural and behavioral determinants of health and health outcomes;
  • A revised section — “Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills” — tests analytic and evaluative skills for applying information from a wide range of social sciences and humanities disciplines, such as ethics and population health;
  • Enhancements to the natural sciences sections that test scientific problem-solving concepts used in biology, general chemistry, organic chemistry, physics and biochemistry;
  • Two hours have been added for testing candidates to complete the expanded MCAT.

Nearly 100,000 Medical College Admission Tests are delivered each year by candidates seeking entry into medical school in the U.S. and Canada. The AAMC partnered with Prometric in 2007 to convert the MCAT from paper-based exams to its current computer-based format. The existing exclusive test delivery contract continues through 2014. The newly signed agreement for administering the revised MCAT runs through 2017.

“The MCAT serves as the premier measurement by which virtually every future U.S. doctor gains access to medical school, and Prometric is delighted to continue our partnership with the AAMC,” said Michael Brannick, Prometric President and CEO. “We have a world-class test delivery team that takes great pride and attention to detail in bringing to market the assessments that determine the right people are in the right jobs. Helping the AAMC ensure that our next generation of doctors has the education, skills and acumen to prosper in medical school is a service we give the utmost consideration.”

The AAMC announced in February the approved new MCAT format. AAMC News Release.
